Suzumura-consistent relations: an overview∗

چکیده

This paper provides a brief introduction to the use and usefulness of Suzumura consistency, a coherence requirement for binary relations that weakens transitivity. The property is introduced by Suzumura (1976b) in the context of collective choice but, as demonstrated in some recent contributions, its applicability reaches beyond the boundaries of social-choice theory. In addition to a summary of its mathematical underpinnings, some recent applications in individual and collective decision-making are provided. Several examples are employed to illustrate the property and how it distinguishes itself from alternative weakenings of transitivity such as quasi-transitivity or acyclicity. Quasi-transitive and Suzumura consistent relations

We examine properties of binary relations that complement quasi-transitivity and Suzumura consistency in the sense that they, together with the original axiom(s), are equivalent to transitivity. In general, the conjunction of quasi-transitivity and Suzumura consistency is strictly weaker than transitivity but in the case of collective choice rules that satisfy further properties, the conjunctio...

Compatible extensions and consistent closures: a fuzzy approach

In this paper ∗–compatible extensions of fuzzy relations are studied, generalizing some results obtained by Duggan in case of crisp relations. From this general result are obtained as particular cases fuzzy versions of some important extension theorems for crisp relations (Szpilrajn, Hansson, Suzumura). Two notions of consistent closure of a fuzzy relation are introduced.

On constrained dual recoverability theorems

In a recent paper [“Paretian Welfare Judgements and Bergsonian Social Choice,” Economic Journal, Vol. 109, 1999, pp. 204-220], Suzumura proposed a possible way of relating the two schools of “new” welfare economics. According to his proposal, the logical possibility of the Paretian “new” welfare economics can be reduced to the constrained dual choice-functional recoverability of the Pareto-comp...

A characterization of consistent collective choice rules

We characterize a class of collective choice rules such that collective preference relations are consistent. Consistency is a weakening of transitivity and a strengthening of acyclicity requiring that there be no cycles with at least one strict preference, which excludes the possibility of a “money pump.” The properties of collective choice rules used in our characterization are unrestricted do...
